Math Grades:
- Daily Assignments/Quick Checks- an assignment done in class that are collected for a grade. This is not always written in your planner.
- Tests- covers multiple concepts. You will only have 2-3 a grading period.
- Projects- is an activity that we will work on over a period of time.
- Homework- any work that is assigned and expected to be completed at home.
Math Fact Fluency:
"By promoting the learning of math facts and mathematics in general through purposeful mathematical experiences, students are not only able to recall their new learning, but they can also do so with understanding. This approach to learning math facts is often referred to as automaticity."
Ways we will work to achieve fact fluency this school year:
- Learn fact strategies using visual models
- Emphasize patterns in math facts
- Emphasize connection between addition/subtraction and multiplication/division
- Strategy based practice once students have conceptual understanding of facts using Greg Tang math fact strategy program
- Developing number sense through a variety of methods
- Drill based games in math centers
- Cards that provide visuals for students to connect the fact to a strategy (See example of cards here! These are great to make and have at home.)
Math Norms:
- Everyone can learn math
- Mistakes are a valuable thing
- Questions are really important
- Math is about creativity and making sense
- Math is about connections and communicating
- Depth is more important than speed
- Math is about learning not performing
